We welcomed Hattian women residing at the Days Inn to our parish hall and kitchen a few days before New Year's Day to prepare a special Haitian soup for the families on January 1st, Haitian Independence Day. The financial gifts received from parishioners in red envelopes were used to covr the cost of the soup ingredients.
The soup is made with a pumpkin base, mixed with various vegetables, meat (usually beef or goat), and spices. Its consumption has become a symbol of unity, liberty, and triumph over oppression. Celebrating with Soup Joumou has become a tradition that connects Haitians to their history and reinforces the values of freedom and equality. The soup serves as a tangible reminder of Haiti's struggle for independence and the resilience of its people in the face of adversity.
Thank you to all who contributed!
